Key Stage 2 Curriculum
The Key Stage 2 Mathematics curriculum at OLA follows a structured Mathematics programme, based on the Busy Ants scheme, which develops children’s fluency in number and confidence with shape while building their problem-solving and reasoning skills. Children are given lots of opportunities to work with physical resources, so that they can gain a firm understanding of the basic concepts.
Interactive Resources
Throughout the school, children use a wide range of interactive resources to support their learning. The school subscribes to MyMaths, and all children have their own log-in details to access resources at home.
To help with the learning of times tables we are participating in Times Table Rock Stars which improves fluency and recall.
Co-Curriculum Mathematics Week
During the Michaelmas term we arrange a whole school Mathematics week in which all of the children across the school work together on a range of mathematical challenges. Parents also take part by supporting activities.
Year 5 and 6 children participate in the Primary Maths Challenge. This is a national competition with high standards which challenges our pupils across the Mathematics curriculum.
Lower School Maths Stories
Hands on Maths!
Year 5 spent the week identifying and building 3D shapes using multi-link cubes. The children had lots of fun making a range of shapes using only the top, side and front views of diagrams.
Lower School Maths Week
The Lower School pupils had great fun focusing on fractions for Maths week.
On Monday all of the children completed a times table challenge to earn points for their Houses. The fastest children were selected to represent their Houses in the times table competition in Assembly.
On Tuesday Year 5 and 6 took part in the national Primary Maths Challenge competition. We will hopefully hear the results soon and see if any of the children have been selected to participate in the bonus round!
On Wednesday all children took part in a fractions trail in school throughout the day.
On Thursday everyone did a fractions investigation with Smarties. We also worked on the fractions rap with Mrs Beckett.
Today the children came to school dressed as rock stars (as did some of the teachers!) – this links with our Times Tables Rock Stars competition that the children have played. The children also performed the fractions rap. Watch the video in the week’s newsletter!
