Academic Optimism – how to manage your inner Eeyore

On Wednesday this week, I gave an assembly on Saint Therese of Lisieux who was awarded the much-coveted title of Doctor of the Church for sharing wisdom on her little way. We all have an ‘inner Eeyore’, a voice telling us we are not good enough, that we keep failing and what is the point of trying. Saint Therese was no different in this respect. She was both conscious of and frustrated by what she saw as her many faults. However, she devised a path to heaven by following her little way which recognised that each day is a gift in which your life can make a difference by the way you choose to live it. Her widely held view in the value of doing small things with great love was popular with ordinary people as it enabled the raging lion of complexity in their lives to be converted into a purring house cat of simplicity.

Winston Churchill once said, A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty. Optimism is the positive expectation of something that is forthcoming. It represents a state of cognition, emotion and motivation regarding the future. Saint Therese was, without a doubt, in the optimist category. She desired to become a saint, and was never discouraged from having this aim, despite holding the view that I have always found that there is the same difference between the saints and me as there is between a mountain whose summit is lost in the clouds and a humble grain of sand trodden underfoot by passers-by.

Even in these challenging times, as I watch pupils moving around the school in their face coverings, there are lots of reasons for optimism. Setting positive goals for the future gives our lives a sense of direction and purpose. And although we face many challenges there are also lots of reasons to stay hopeful. By consciously choosing our priorities we can overcome issues, make progress and focus on what really matters.

As we all find our stride this term, we naturally draw on our own strength and inner resources. But research has shown that it is also helpful to curate a community that makes us know that anything is possible; people with whom we want to co-create the future. Thankfully, we already have a strong, caring and supportive community in place at OLA, in which teachers, parents, and pupils all play a critical role when it comes to ensuring that pupils develop academically, socially and personally. Indeed, OLA fits very well into the three-dimensional construct known as ‘Academic Optimism’; a recognised triad of school activities, all of which have a direct input into academic achievement.

The first point of the triangle relates to a school’s quest for academic excellence. This is, of course, the very essence of a school’s purpose. At OLA we consistently seek academic excellence, doing so by nurturing each pupil individually to be the best they can be in all areas of their lives. Our excellent value added demonstrates that this is an approach that works and gives us every reason for academic optimism. I am delighted to see that pupils are earning multiple ClassCharts points at this point in the term. Our top three highest scoring pupils are: Teo DG in Year 7 with 43 positive points, Eleanor H in Year 7 with 41 points and Grace H in Upper Sixth with 37 points. Well done to all of you for your positive efforts.

The second point of the triangle relates to the collective efficacy of the school community to deliver academic excellence. I see every day, first hand, the daily activities of Form Tutors, Section Heads and teachers, working closely with pupils to help develop their academic buoyancy and help them manage their ‘inner Eeyore’. This year we have introduced Thinking Skills into Years 7 and 8, as we believe it is important to encourage pupils to engage directly in their learning processes. A drawing created by Ayaan M (Year 7) at the top of this blog captures the essence of these new lessons.

The final point of the triangle relates to pupils and parents as trusted partners of OLA in relation to pupil achievement. Academic success comes when achievement is valued and supported by all within the community and we are fortunate enough to have this in spades.

So, as the term unfolds, I would encourage all within the OLA community to play our part in building academic optimism. In striving for academic achievement, pupils would also benefit from remembering Saint Therese’s little way. Carrying out small, often unnoticed, acts of kindness towards others, helps all in the community to thrive.




The Anatomy of Rest

As we finish things off for the term today, our minds will be pre-occupied with one word: REST.

The word rest derives from the Old English ræst (noun) or ræstan (verb) and is Germanic in origin, relating to a break in activity. In Latin, the closest equivalent is requies, rest from labour, which has its root in quies. Quies was an integral part of the medieval monastic tradition and encompassed ideas of rest, quiet, repose, the cessation of labour, the leading of a quiet life and keeping still.

Students, staff and parents have tackled the various remote learning challenges head on during Trinity term, with excellent engagement in the provision on offer, as shown by the data. There has been a total of 14,271 positive class charts points awarded since we launched the system! I have highlighted our top scorers within this blog – well done to all! But I think we would all agree that rest is never more needed than at this present time.

Of course, even as we down tools for the summer break, in the modern technological world rest can be hard to find. With conflicting demands on our time, being at rest takes effort and, somewhat ironically, needs to be worked at to achieve! For me personally, it is the active pursuit of walking that enables my mind to be stilled.

Kate Humble, the presenter, wrote a book last year entitled Thinking on My Feet which describes how the simple act of putting one foot in front of the other and the rhythm of that action, enables the walker to free their mind from the burdens of the day, whilst creating small gaps through which creative ideas can seep through into the uncrowded space. When we are at rest, our minds have a tendency to wander and our brains are in fact busier when we’re not concentrating on a task than when we are.

I was recently reminded that the biggest world study of rest was undertaken by researchers at Durham University in 2016. The study, designed to investigate what rest means to different people, how they like to rest and whether there is a link between rest and well-being, involved 18,000 people from 134 countries.

At the end of the study, a list of the top most restful activities was published. It is interesting that many of the activities on the list are solitary ones which, after a period of remotely working alone, might not sound particularly appealing!

I did a quick poll of some pupils to see what they viewed as restful activities and there were some similarities. It would appear though that the key aspect to rest is getting the balance of the rhythms of our work, rest and time correct, with and without others. To truly feel rested we need both time alone to process thoughts and time socialising with others.

Staying Afloat with Academic Buoyancy

As the end of the academic year approaches and we reflect on the most unusual of terms, it is worth reminding ourselves about the skill sets, some new, some just a bit rusty, that remote learning has prompted us all to use. Independence and resilience are two that spring to mind.

However, resilience is a term that is often used incorrectly. Resilience and grit (perseverance and passion for long-terms goals) refer to the ability to thrive and develop in the face of adversity. This week our connectED and PSHCE pupils were tasked with drawing a poster for International Women in Engineering Day.

With women representing only 12% of the UK’s engineering workforce, the ability to be resilient and demonstrate grit must feature quite high in their skillset. One such example was Margaret Partridge, a remarkable woman who, in the absence of employment opportunities for women in the engineering sector after World War One, set up and ran a successful electrical engineering business of her own and used it as a platform to support women engineers in their careers.

I have included a poster this week from a student who pointed out the value of Ada Lovelace’s mathematical skills to the world of engineering. I particularly like the quote, which is full of self belief, a character trait that lies at the heart of resilience.

Whilst resilience is important when working towards longer term goals, there is a different type of resilience, an academic-centred subset of resilience that helps us to understand that success is incremental and that learning takes time and effort. Researchers state that a more accurate term for this resilience is Academic Buoyancy.

Academic buoyancy is the ability to successfully deal with academic setbacks and challenges that are ‘typical of the ordinary course of school life. These might include dealing with patches of poor performance, typical stress levels and daily pressures, threats to confidence and dips in motivation
and engagement. Nothing then, that we have not encountered during remote learning!

In a book published this week entitled Becoming Buoyant, Author Marc Smith, builds upon previous research by the University of Oxford, when he suggests the idea of The 5C’s in enabling students to develop their academic buoyancy. The 5C’s refer to Composure, Confidence, Co-ordination, Commitment and Control.

Composure is concerned with managing every day anxieties by removing the fear of failure concept, the idea of failing forward that I referred to in an earlier blog.

Confidence refers to students believing in themselves in specific situations and developing a Power of Yet attitude; I am unable to do this yet.

Co-ordination is in reference to managing workloads in a coordinated way and avoiding procrastination, a concept we all find difficult at times.

Commitment refers to persistence with academic studies, an area which can be more easily achieved by having a broadened mindset underpinned by positive thoughts.

Control is about ownership of learning, where the focus is on the student’s individual improvement and development.

The author also hints at a highly important 6th C, that of Community. The OLA community, families and the wider environment all serve to support the development of the other strands.

If students can learn to become more buoyant in their everyday school activities and in their academic studies, they will become more resilient individuals in later life.

Being thrust into the remote learning experience has meant that we have all developed our own degrees of academic buoyancy. In many ways this concept is merely putting a label on the coping strategies that we have all used during this difficult time. However, the idea of becoming more buoyant in our everyday encounters, whether at home, in our work or at school, is an important one and is more than just a tag. We do not yet know what the start of the next academic year will bring, so looking to develop The 6 C’s further will be more important than ever.

I began this blog with a focus on women’s resilience, so it is fitting that I finish it with some quotes from a UN article on this very topic.

TREEmendous Empathy

The rallying call to action with the words our team of five million was used in March by the New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ahern, as she garnered support for lockdown at the start of the COVID-19 crisis.

Miss Ahern has widely been regarded as a model of empathetic leadership, proving that there is space for political leaders to be both empathetic and strong and capable of empathising with the circumstances of others. Focusing on kindness above strength and assertiveness brings out the authenticity in all of us. Those around us would rather see an authentic version of us rather than an over-engineered one – someone who fails forward from time to time, someone who has stumbled and has failings but is honest about those moments.

A recent Forbes article suggests that our leaders of tomorrow are likely to need four rare skills: to be systems thinker, to show intellectual honesty and humility and to be empathetic and charitable in their thoughts and actions.

To be a systems thinker requires looking at the bigger picture and attempting to understand how all the problems we confront are interconnected. Globally we have never been more interconnected than we are now and empathy is the cornerstone of systems thinking. There are no isolated solutions, only interconnected ones. In order to enact change at any level, whether it be at school, within our local communities or in the wider world, we must first identify all the players that are contributing or who are affected by that problem. Secondly, we must work out how they relate to each other and thirdly – and most crucially of all – we need to understand, empathise and quantify the impact of those relationships on one another and on those that are outside the problem.

Whilst our OLA team is somewhat smaller than the team Miss Ahern refers to, those within our community this week have been looking into the value of empathy and the rewards it can bring during what has been Refugee Week. This comes hot on the heels of Empathy Day, which was on 9 June, and the Feast of the Sacred Heart, which is today and which focuses on the heart as the seat of the emotions and the outpouring of love that should animate all we do.

The theme of Refugee Week was Imagine; an invitation to imagine a kinder and more empathetic world and to put ourselves in others’ shoes, so we can build empathy and understanding. Pupils responded with some creative versions of Empathy Trees in which they viewed empathy as a seed from which a strong tree develops. The roots represent the kind things we can do to build empathy and understanding with others. The leaves are the positive effects that can come from understanding people, for the individual, for the other person, the community and the wider world. I have also included a selection of poems on the theme Imagine below.

By building the skills of a systems thinker we can learn to stand back from emerging problems, to look at the whole and bigger picture, before tackling the individual parts. By doing so, the interconnections of the parts reveal themselves and a greater level of empathy emerges. The tools of a systems thinker, often deployed by leaders such as Jacinda Ahern, involve working together to solve issues, building relationships rather than choosing isolation and considering the value of other viewpoints.

There are lessons for us all, I believe, in this approach.

Why Productive Failures are Essential for Learning

Over the past six blogs I have shared my thoughts on the value of making connections academically and socially, the significance of the 3Ps of Patience, Positivity and Perseverance in our achievements and how to attain motivation and happiness.

The news reports on 31 May of the successful docking of the Space X Dragon capsule with the International Space station, the outcome of nine years of hard work, highlight the importance of another valuable tool in building success, that of productive failures. You may think it odd that I am touching on the topic of failure for my blog this week, given the assessments that are on the horizon for some of our year groups, but bear with me.

Whilst unproductive failure results from apathy and a lack of effort, the productive kind is a result of positive effort. To achieve the milestone of sending crew into space for the first time since 2011, Elon Musk and his engineering team overcame a string of failures and had to make some swift design changes to reach the point of a successful launch. Jeff Hoffman, Professor of aeronautics and astronautics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a former NASA astronaut, was quoted shortly after the event by The Guardian as saying ‘’At NASA, failure is not an option, but at SpaceX failure is how they learn, how they get things right’’.

Taking calculated risks and embracing failure is an honourable pursuit and one which is well-documented to bring success, so long as those working alongside you adopt a similar mentality and a culture of learning from failures is in place. Whilst it is important for our own levels of motivation to succeed, it is also true that when we always have success, we can lose focus and fail to be motivated to look for improvement

We can become over-confident when we succeed too often. This is a circular argument though, as we need a certain number of successes under our belts in order to make us more resilient to the concept of failure. Failing forwards as it has come to be known, certainly becomes easier to practise when you have more expert knowledge of a topic.

I don’t know what Henry Ford, one of the most renowned entrepreneurs in history, would have made of the Tesla electric cars used to transport the astronauts to their launch pad! It is a far cry from the vision he set out, more than a century ago, of transforming transportation with the development of the automobile. Although the path to success was not a smooth one for Henry, it is said that he did not allow failure to hinder innovation, rather using these setbacks to instruct his future success. He was once quoted as saying “Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently”.

Failing forward is a concept embraced and encouraged within OLA. I am sure that the Year 11 and Upper Sixth pupils currently learning something new within the Learning Journeys programme will have experienced one or two productive failures over the last few weeks. Perhaps their attempts at French cooking, juggling or learning Japanese may not have been jaw-droppingly good after the first try! But if we keep in mind Henry Ford’s words, it does not feel so much like a failure as an opportunity.

As pupils embark on next week’s assessments, I would urge them to strive for success, as it is worth seeking for the motivational rewards it brings, but to view any setbacks through the lens of failing forward; a necessary and helpful step to reaching your goals.

Joyful June – Philosophy of Happiness

Religion, philosophy, and the arts have long considered happiness a subject suitable for study. In the Michaelmas term we devoted several assemblies to the religious aspects of attaining happiness and I thought this month would be a good point to return to this theme. The movement Action for Happiness describes this month as Joyful June and offers 10 keys to happier living, spelling out the phrase Great Dream. With the end of the academic year still a way off and impending assessments for some year groups, happiness may not be at the forefront of students’ minds! But in this blog I attempt to show them how learning and happiness are heavily intertwined.

Taking my own advice that learning precedes motivation, I have been dipping a toe into the world of Philosophy, reading a book entitled Letters to Sofia about Happiness by Raffaele Tamborrino. Although it is not an original work by one of the three great thinkers of ancient Greece, it is a series of reflective letters inspired by Socrates, Plato and Aristotle, in which the author offers advice to his daughter Sofia, in modern times, on how to make her life happier. Here I offer three of these pieces of advice.

Socrates had a great intellectual hunger. In speeches made nearly 2400 years ago, we are guided to the view that if you adopt the mindset of considering your knowledge to be always partial and superficial, this provides the stimulus to continue to learn. To be happy it is important to take care of ourselves by feeding our minds with knowledge, knowledge gained by thinking critically. You might expect me to include this piece of advice, given that our primary business in education is the acquisition of knowledge. But there is a lifelong lesson here, that continuous learning brings happiness. Paolo Poli, an Italian theatre actor and lifelong learner, who still performed on stage in his eighties, was once quoted as saying The mind is like an umbrella – it must be open to operate’

The second piece of advice is to know yourself, recognise your limits and ask questions. This is not meant to be a self-limiting view but rather that it is only through awareness of our own ignorance that we are able to fill in the gaps by asking questions, reflecting, investigating and progressing our knowledge. Asking questions and being open to dialogue and discussion with others (the Socratic Method) was a way of questioning designed to expose ignorance and clear the way for knowledge.

The third piece of advice is to behave according to your principles and live in total awareness. Socrates was the critical conscience of the city of Athens, always living according to his thinking and advocating that we should build our own existence rather than living that set out by others. He was not a popular figure for holding and sharing this view publicly with others but he never wavered from this view during his life.

This week both the Senior and Junior School have been completing the transition to the MS Teams platform and Teams video conferencing. We have all certainly been feeding our minds with knowledge and the students have been very receptive! With any transition there are challenges and as always, we value the thoughts of parents and students, so do please provide feedback on the last part of the transition, using the survey link. As we progress through this half term, continued remote lessons, Learning Journeys, exploring Teams functionality further and Trinity assessments….. do bear in mind that any learning you do, any questions you ask, any knowledge gaps you fill, will be helping you to achieve an increasingly happier mental state. Although it might not always feel like it at the time!

Motivation in the Middle

As we approach the middle stage of our remote learning provision, motivation becomes an important consideration. How often do we find that we are motivated at the start of an activity as it is new and interesting, motivated at the end as the activity draws to a close, but we lose interest somewhere in the middle? How we motivate in the middle and maintain momentum will be an increasing challenge.

There are two kinds of motivation, extrinsic and intrinsic. Extrinsic motivation tends to be linked to performance and refers to activities done to receive an external reward, whereas intrinsic motivation comes from the person and involves behaviours done for their own sake that are personally rewarding and develop curiosity, like helping other people, participating in an enjoyable sport or studying a fascinating subject.

Research from the Motivation Science Lab at the University of Reading has shown that mastery-based motivation supports long-term learning whereas performance-based motivation only helps short-term learning. In a recent article, Courtney Okolo, the world indoor 400m champion, talks about her personal response to lockdown and acknowledges that she is being driven by her progress and the goal of mastery rather than competition at this time of great uncertainty.

Many sportsmen and women are using the idea of marginal gains as a motivational tool, by zoning in on specific aspects of training, as part of developing mastery. In Courtney’s words: ‘’I just take one day at a time and I like progressing – seeing small progressions in my training. I have enough motivation from the day before and to do better the next day’’. The concept of marginal gains was developed by Sir Dave Brailsford, who was responsible for reviving British cycling prior to London 2012 Olympics. 1% became the team mantra, all day every day. The focus was on making small improvements every day, everywhere and anywhere, 1% at a time.

The action of learning precedes motivation, although it is often perceived to be the other way around. One of the biggest myths about motivation is that we need to feel motivated before we can do anything. Psychologists call this the motivation trap. Learning something interesting and developing curiosity has a great deal of motivational power. If we search for a tiny margin of improvement in everything we do, we will gain a sense of achievement and increase our motivation. Motivation is infectious and this is a contagion that you actually do want to catch and spread to others. As it spreads from one person to another, you become energised and able to motivate others.

This week students have engaged energetically with the Learning Journeys programme, showing curiosity and widening their knowledge base in preparation for the next stage in their learning. They have been instrumental in spreading motivation.

Kindness also has motivational power and can be a great antidote to those feeling bereft of motivation. This week is Mental Health Awareness Week 2020 and the theme is Kindness. At OLA this has been an ongoing theme within PSHCE. This week pupils considered the links between kindness and mental health in more depth.

They responded to the theme of If we make space for kindness, it will grow and I have included a selection of their work in this blog. ConnectED pupils have explored the 17 Global Goals, a commitment made by 193-member states of the United Nations in 2015. They have explored their own view of the goals under the kindness lens and how they might incorporate some of them closer to home.

Taking small steps in our learning will play a key part in progression next half term, but the precursor to this is rest and the recharging of batteries!

Support and Opportunity

Last week I mentioned the 3 P’s of Patience, Positivity and Perseverance. One name that is worth remembering as the embodiment of these values is Jessica Watson.

It is ten years to this day, on 15 May 2010, that this 16-year-old Australian sailed her 34-foot boat back into Sydney harbour, after 210 days at sea and more than 22,000 nautical miles, becoming the youngest person to sail solo, non-stop and unassisted around the world. On completion of the voyage, Jessica was met by the then Prime Minister who declared her an Australian hero.

In a simple speech that won admiration across Australia and around the world, she responded by announcing that she disagreed with him, that she didn’t consider herself a hero—just an ordinary person, who had a dream, worked hard at it and proved that anything really is possible.

Her book, True Spirit, makes fascinating reading and the strategies and mindset used for coping with long periods at sea offer a useful perspective on our current isolating conditions. Her advice, voiced along with others, such as Dee Caffari, the first woman to complete a solo non-stop westward round the world voyage, is to:

• Go easy on ourselves as we adjust and remind ourselves that we will adapt

• Have daily rituals that give some structure and consistency

• Focus on the smaller milestones as they will lead to the bigger goals

• Focus only on what is within your circle of control

• Make a point of staying connected, but also savour the rare solitude

• Be supportive for those who may be having an even rougher time: we may also be giving ourselves strength

• Remember that challenges make us stronger

• Look for the opportunities and be creative

There is some sound advice for the whole OLA community here and I have referenced two of these points below in relation to OLA learning this week.

Pupils continue to apply themselves to remote learning in all sorts of ways and I am delighted that we have more W.O.R.L.D awards to give out this week.

Support of others is at the heart of the Fair-Trade movement, which was the focus in PSHCE this week. We marked the occurrence of World Fair Trade Day on 9 May by learning about the provenance of Divine Chocolate. In order to celebrate their Ghanaian ownership Divine decorate their bars with Adinkra symbols which are traditional West African motifs used to express the connection between the verbal and the visual.

I challenged the pupils to design their own unique symbol based upon three values or activities that were important to them. I have included a collection of their designs below.

A special mention must go to Ethan R (Y7) for extending his learning by using Divine Chocolate to bake some delicious cookies!

Next week Year 11 and the Upper Sixth embark upon a new Learning Journeys programme, which coincides with the Campaign for Learning’s Learning at Work Week 2020. Our advice is to look for the opportunities and be creative as they build their personal learning journeys over the next four weeks. There is something for everyone within the programme, designed to enrich students’ learning experiences and provide an opportunity to reflect on the skills they will need on their future paths.

Three Things I Value – Adinkra Symbols PSHCE Project

Patience, Positivity and Perseverance

Throughout history, language adapts and evolves. The observed fact that ‘social change brings linguistic change’, was voiced recently by a Senior Editor at the Oxford English Dictionary, whose content was recently updated with neologisms, newly coined word or expressions, arising from the present global crisis. Carefully chosen language, catchily referred to at present as the ‘virus vernacular’, is a feature of many crises. Tomorrow the United Kingdom remembers the end of war in Europe, 75 years ago. During the early days of the Second World War, Churchill chose his words with deliberate precision; crafting and delivering speeches that were some of the most powerful ever given.

When delivering the UK’s biggest ever school assembly last week to Oak National Academy, the Archbishop of Canterbury chose the word ‘hope’. This followed the theme used by the Pope in his Easter address where he talked of the ‘contagion of hope’.

Reporters described the Archbishop’s supportive message as uplifting, using a phrase which made me smile; ‘the voice of Zoom rather than the voice of doom’.

Referencing a quote from Nelson Mandela during his years of imprisonment, ‘’May your choices reflect your hopes not your fears,”, the Archbishop reassured listeners that the 3 P’s of Patience, Positivity and Perseverance were the key to embracing hope at this difficult time.

We have certainly seen the 3 P’s in action amongst the OLA community this week across all subjects and featuring strongly in connectED and PSHCE tasks. I have included a selection of poems and artwork from our ongoing kindness theme. The careful use of language in these poems reflects the theme particularly well. A particular mention must go to Davy W (Y8) for his poignant and beautifully crafted poem about finding kindness in the most unlikely of places during war. It is very fitting to be able to include it within this week’s blog (see below). Thank you to everyone who has submitted poems.

In connectED, pupils learned of the Hill Family on the island of Guernsey, whose children were evacuated to the UK during the Second World War when the island came under occupation.

Their only means of communication was through the infrequent use of ‘brief letters’; 25-word letters to their families. I have included a selection of work from pupils from an activity in which they wrote their own 25-word communications either from a historical perspective or from the view of our present-day lockdown.

Pupils also explored the reading patterns of the war generation and how it helped them to get through the crisis.

As part of Deaf Awareness week and in keeping with our kindness theme, pupils reflected in PSHCE on the drive to increase the use of Sign language to help tackle isolation and loneliness for people with hearing difficulties. They learned to sign their name and create other sentences using this richly expressive language. Watch out for videos in the newsletter to see them in action!

Despite the social changes brought about by the lockdown, linguistic change has been less evident amongst our community. The increased physical distance between staff and pupils has not dampened the spirit of OLA and we remain true to our values, adapting our remote provision to meet pupil needs. ‘Age quod agis’ (Whatever you do, do well) is as abundantly evident in online interactions as it is under normal circumstances.

Interconnectedness and Wellbeing

Welcome to the connectED blog, a new feature running weekly during term time, to help the OLA community stay connected and celebrate success even though we are all working remotely from each other.

In last week’s blog, I mentioned interactivity and social contact as key factors in remote learning success. As we come to the end of our third week of remote learning, each of us is taking away something different from the remote experience, but a feature that we all have in common is that, despite the daily virtual contact, we miss the connections with our friends and colleagues and the social interactions that were once commonplace.

My current reading material is a book called The Self Delusion by Tom Oliver, local author and Professor of Applied Ecology at Reading University. It is a popular science book about our human interconnectedness and explores how people, animals, plants and the planet we live on are all intimately connected – and why this matters.

There is an accompanying blog in which two of his points help to explain our need at OLA for social connections for effective learning and wellbeing: No person is an island and you are not exactly the same person that you were five minutes ago. Tom uses these phrases to deliver the message that the neural network in our brains is altered by every word, touch or pheromone that we receive from other people. This neural network is composed of around 170 billion neurons with the connections between them being formed and lost at a rate of up to 250,000 every second! Such a high level of activity means that our inner selves are constantly connected to, and altered by, others. No wonder we crave a chat with our friends!

Further afield from OLA, all over the world, collaborators and innovators are finding the means to stay connected to each other. Recently, a team of scientists has developed materials which can harvest water directly out of the air, designed to help communities in arid parts of the world.

Tom would class this as an example of interconnected human endeavour. The experience of lockdown, is pushing us to re-evaluate our interconnectedness to other people, recognising that when we have social interactions, we are less anxious, feel a greater sense of wellbeing and have more empathy. Changes we have made to the remote learning programme this week reflect both the feedback we have received and the desire to improve interconnectedness and wellbeing in the home.

Speaking of empathy, work on our Red Cross Kindness theme has progressed further this week in Y7-9 PSHCE and I continue to be impressed by the quality and creativity of OLA pupils. A selection of their work is displayed within this blog and I am sure you will agree it is of a very high standard! As well as artwork, pupils have produced thoughtful poems. Each week I will showcase a few of these poems.

All classes continue to be very engaged in their learning and have adapted very well to the Teams environment.

The connectED groups have been reflecting on comparisons between the restrictions we face now and those faced by the public during WWII. They have explored popular reading material of the era and have discovered how difficult it is to write a 25-word brief letter of the type that was enabled by the Red Cross during WWII. Next week the groups will focus on a nationwide school project to design an Outdoor Learning Centre of the Future; bringing together the themes at the heart of Tom’s book.

ConnectEd – Issue 2

Welcome to the connectED blog, a new feature running weekly during term time, to help the OLA community stay connected and celebrate success even though we are all working remotely from each other.

As we have taken up remote learning this week, the OLA community has become connectED again, albeit in a slightly different way for the Senior School, through the Microsoft Teams environment. However, connections did occur over the Easter period with a staggering 95 families joining me in the last week for a remote lesson on the use of Teams!

A link was also circulated to access a Wakelet collection of connectED parent resources. This has been updated recently with a collection of research-based resources from the Education Endowment Fund (EEF), to help parents with remote learning. If you haven’t seen it – do take a look.

This week the school has shown its connectEDness in various ways. Year 7 were engaged in a Red Cross initiative on Kindness will keep us together and produced some wonderful posters.

A special mention must go to Oliver S for his vivid watercolour inspired by thinking about holidays in Scotland and longing for the time when he can return.

The creative work of Henry K also stands out in the centre of the collage, capturing the sense of OLA family.

Year 8 and 9 started their connectED projects with a small foray into Wonders and Big Ideas. From their detailed reports and personal views, I have learned a great deal about Boba Tea, Earthquake Lights and a variety of other topics.

I am delighted that Class Charts points have been rolling in this week. Our four top scoring pupils this week are Brooks F (Year 8), Rocco S (Year 7), Henry W (Year 8) and Lydia M (Year 8). Well done to all of you. I recently read an article on the effectiveness of remote learning written by Daisy Christodoulou, a leading educational commentator and author, whose latest book is aptly titled Teachers vs Tech? The case for an ed tech revolution.

In her research for the book, she came across the idea of disruptive innovators, which in its very broadest sense refers to a stimulus which challenges a company’s normal processes. This concept is very relevant in current times as we grapple with the worldwide disruptive innovator of the Coronavirus. As with all schools, the disruptive innovation that results from such a stimulus has been the development of remote learning. Daisy notes that:

“to begin with, it may not be as good as what you get in traditional classrooms. But over time, it will get better until it ends up being as good or better as what is on offer in schools’’.

As we finish week 2 of remote learning, I very much hope that our combined provision of Microsoft Teams in Senior School, Wakelet in Junior School and Zoom is coming close to replicating what we do on site.

The article refers to the success of remote learning being dependent on three key factors:

Firstly, there is a need for high quality and well-designed content and for teachers to curate the best online and offline sources of content.

Both the Teams and Wakelet environments provide OLA teachers with the means to construct well-resourced tasks with a focus on organising and directing content for pupils.

The second and third points are interwoven. Daisy reminds us we all need human interaction – ‘’Remember we’re not brains in a jar’’.

The most effective remote lessons include different types of interactivity. Learning is a social activity, so by combining Zoom with well-designed assignments set through Teams or Wakelets, and the ability for students to interact with the teachers through virtual conversations, we are striving to provide some social connections.

Daisy’s parting thought is that ‘’you can always turn to an even older learning technology – the book!” which leads me nicely onto this week’s W.O.R.L.D Literacy Challenge award holders.

Awards are given for excellent contributions in Writing, Oracy, Reading, Listening and Discussion, and represent a small token of thanks for the hard work pupils are putting in remotely to engage in a positive way with their learning.

W.O.R.L.D Literacy Challenge Awards 24 April 2020



ConnectEd – Issue 1

Welcome to the connectED blog, a new feature running weekly during term time, to help the OLA community stay connected and celebrate success even though we are all working remotely from each other.

In a recent blog by the renowned independent educationalist Mary Curnock Cook entitled Connectedness, trust and student engagement, we are reminded that ‘’feeling connected is highly correlated with trust’’. Mutual trust developed by making connections, leads to an increased likelihood to seek support. Being aware of available support and utilising resources leads to increased trust. Support has certainly been felt at all levels of the OLA community this week, as we have connected together in various ways.

Over the course of the week, I asked my study skills classes how they have organised themselves at home. Thank you to Louis C in Year 8 for giving us an insight into his set-up:

‘’I am working at my kitchen table with plenty of space and no distractions. I am on an organ stool with my laptop in front of me. All of my books are on shelves organised beside me. On one shelf I have textbooks and the other, exercise books. I also have The Week Junior for breaks. On the other side, I have stationary and a dictionary, and Usborne reference books to help me. I have a cat called Boris to give me company. I have a cup of tea and Swedish biscuits for break time.‘’

Connecting to one another through video is becoming the new normal, and we have embraced all that Zoom has to offer for remote learning, with great success. Staff have connected extensively, through a steady stream of helpful tips to enhance Zoom performance. Pupils have risen admirably to the challenge, with reports that they are using Zoom in a disciplined and mature way. Mrs Parry is just one teacher of many who has reported that ‘’All yr7 and 8 who joined zoom have been brilliant!’’. The same has been true of many other classes. We have seen speaking tests, chemical reactions and many more activities all being done through the creative use of video. As with the introduction of any new tool, there has been plenty to learn and we will continue to adapt Zoom to suit our needs.

Connections can also be built through literature. I would encourage every pupil to take some time for themselves over Easter and get lost in a good book. There are some exciting suggestions on the reading lists in this week’s newsletter. Do remember that any book you read will lead to a W.O.R.L.D Literacy Challenge award!

On a final note, returning to the idea of connectedness, trust and student engagement, there has been much evidence of OLA pupils connecting, trusting and engaging in their learning, and in doing so supporting both each other and staff in this journey. This is borne out in the number of W.O.R.L.D Literacy Challenge awards I am able to distribute this week. This is a new cross-curricular literacy challenge for all pupils, designed specifically for remote learning. Awards are given for excellent contributions in WRITING, ORACY, READING, LISTENING and DISCUSSION. Parents can nominate their son/daughter for an award – just e-mail breynaert@olab.org.uk with details of the activity they have done!

I am delighted we have so many awards to give out this week. Those that were not eligible for an award this week, do get onto my Special Mention list though! I am sure pupils will return with much enthusiasm after Easter. Have a well-earned break.
